Art Direction, Print, Experemental Book Design (2018)
This project is a visual interpretation of Adma Harper’s essay on musician John Maus and his unique musical aesthetic. The essay describes how each track from Maus’s album Love is Real reflects a distinct facet of his artistic universe, which served as the foundation for the design concept.
Each spread in the book features the title of one of the album’s tracks, paired with a cropped photograph of a human body. This imagery subtly immerses the reader in Maus’s aesthetic world, inviting them to experience the album’s essence in an abstract, ambiguous way. Hidden texts throughout the book encourage readers to listen deeply and interpret Maus’s music and the essay’s themes for themselves, fostering a personal connection to the work.
The design embraces a sense of discovery and introspection, allowing the audience to form their own meaning from both the music and the essay.
